COMPASS FM :
RANGIORA & NORTH CANTERBURY

Compass FM has been in someone’s thoughts since 2006/2007 when Cantabrian Owen Patterson was the one who asked ‘why’ North Canterbury had no local radio station. He gathered around a team of experts and on Queens Birthday weekend - June 2011, Compass FM began full time, full power transmission from
the purpose built studios in the old Manchester Unity rooms in High Street Rangiora.

Compass FM is a unique radio station in New Zealand; being the only community station on full power transmission.

Compass FM, is a non-profit registered charity that presents a mix of features informing, entertaining and connecting all of the various towns & communities in North Canterbury together.

We are like the collective Towns Cryer but
come out of speakers and into many thousands
of North Cantabrian ears every minute.

Our mix of music through your workday, weekend and evenings has something for everyone, and if,
just occasionally, we play a less than favourite track
of yours, there’s always an absolute radio banger
coming right up!

We strive to have as many voices of North Canterbury onto our frequencies as much as we can to give locals an opportunity to come onto Compass FM and share their particular message, this could be from a representative from the white ribbon trust to an 8 year old girl who had a song to sing.

Our primary transmitter is on Mt Grey with two repeaters, one on Wallace Peak, to cover the Amuri and Hanmer basins and also on Beltana, which allows us to broadcast into Kaikoura and further north.

Mt Grey transmitters cover Amberley to Akaroa
(true, pick us up on the beach) and as far south
as Ashburton, also, on the internet.

Compass FM is a registered charity and is a non profit organisation.

Compass FM - The Voices of North Canterbury.

Broadcasting on :
104.9FM - Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Oxford, Rolleston,
Darfield, Waikuku, Pegasus, Culverden.

SOUTH CANTERBURY'S 100.3FM :
TIMARU & SOUTH CANTERBURY

In the year 2000, James Valentine created a
radio business venture in Timaru; ‘The Heat FM’ -
he successfully brought top 40 hits, rock & pop songs
to the eardrums of Timaru.

By establishing a radio station, it provided local information & quality entertainment with a true local connection - to become one of the regions leading
radio stations of its era.

The Heat FM then merged in 2001 with The Port FM Music Network operation where James had the role of production engineer, afternoon radio host and general
fix it guy, for 17 years.

Today, again with James we are bringing back real local radio to South Canterbury.

100.3 FM wants to give a voice to its community again, telling our stories, tackling the issues that affect us and playing the music anthems of the 80’s, 90's, 2000's and now.

100.3 FM is radio by, for and about the people of
South Canterbury!

We are an independent radio station located in

OTAGO RADIO ASSOCIATION :
4XD - RADIO DUNEDIN :
DUNEDIN & OTAGO

On the 17th November 1921 the first radio broadcast was made here in NZ when the head of physics at the Otago University Professor Robert Jack broadcast from the University of Otago.

There was no doubt that the professor's work was avidly followed by local listeners and by mid 1922 there was an enormous growth in the interest in radio.

On the 1st August 1922 the inaugural meeting of the Otago Radio Association was held and the association met again on the 4th October where the first broadcast was held using the call sign DN and then each Tuesday and Friday evening on
1000 kc with a power of 50 watts from the old Technical School Building in Moray Place.

Over the next seventeen years the station had call signs of 4AB and 4ZB and when the government's commercial of the ZB network was set up in 1937 the Radio Association's call sign was changed to 4ZD until 1948 when it was changed to 4XD.

50 years of broadcasting by 4XD was celebrated in October 1972 with a special 50th Anniversary dinner at La Scala and a week long outside broadcast from the window of the then DIC in the Octagon. This was probably the first outside broadcast in the station's history. OB equipment was kindly provided by the NZBC.

In late 1989 the Labour Government decided it was time to deregulate broadcasting in NZ this meant that any station who held a licence could turn commercial and broadcast 24 hours a day.
So in October 1990, 4XD went full time commercial. It was decided we needed to change our call sign as 4XD had the stigma of a station that broadcast religious programmes when on the air. Now being commercial all of the religious programmes were dropped and it was decided to call the station Radio Dunedin from that point onwards.

From 1993, Radio Dunedin was part of Radio Otago [4XO] (which later became RadioWorks and MediaWorks).
Neil Collins and Owen Rooney were popular presenters during many years
of high rating success for Radio Dunedin.

Skip forward a couple of decades...
100 years of broadcasting was
celebrated in October 2022.

Radio Dunedin is the Official Civil Defence Information Station for
Dunedin & Otago.

4XD : Radio Dunedin is now part of the Radio Aotearoa Network.

Broadcasting on : 1305AM,
in Dunedin's Central City on 106.7FM,
and in Mosgiel on 106.7FM.
